Mindset is a full-service mining consulting firm with strong credentials in providing geological, engineering and consulting expertise associated with major mining project development activities worldwide.

Mindset routinely performs evaluations that encompass all aspects associated with the investigation, design, economic analysis and resulting investment decision-making of potential mining projects. Mindset’s studies are geared towards identifying fatal flaws or technical deficiencies in data and approach, resulting in recommendations for advancing a project to the next logical stage.

The recommendations aim to provide cohesive, achievable and dependable results, utilising a team of talented geologists and engineers with a combination of practical operating experience and sound engineering principals.

Mindset’s studies are based on the fact that it has performed numerous independent evaluations of conceptual-, pre-feasibility-, and bankable feasibility level studies including greenfield- and brownfield exploration programs; permitting; data management; collection and processing; geological modelling; mine planning; equipment selection; costing; and economic analysis.

Mindset has extensive mining-related experience in South Africa, including several engagements with mining companies and for South Africa’s power utility, Eskom.

The Mindset team boasts a collective 150 years’ relevant and applicable local and international practical experience amongst its mining and engineering consulting members.

Mindset has concluded studies for clients in South Africa; the rest of the African continent, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the United States of America. It is currently engaged in various projects.


Mindset was formed by Wynand Marais (Pr. Cert. Eng.) in January 2008.

Mindset Mining Consultants (Pty) Ltd was registered on 1 March 2011 to build on the achievements achieved by Mindset Coal Consultancy Services CC over the preceding years.

Since its inception, Mindset has completed several assignments and projects and has grown to such an extent to warrant the appointment of additional shareholders, the employment of extra consultants and the formation of associate consulting agreements with other consultants and consulting companies to work with as and when the need arises.

Mindset (PTY)’s registration is a direct result of this rapid growth and the vision for providing improved services to an ever growing demand for its coal expertise in the consulting sector.

The shareholders of Mindset CC also wanted to create an opportunity for a Previously Disadvantaged South African (PDSA) to become a shareholder of the Company.

The Anglo American and Khula Enterprise Finance Limited’s Mining Fund recognised Mindset CC’s growth and profile in the industry¬†and entered into negotiations with Mindset CC’s shareholders to purchase shares and then provide loan funding to a PDSA to become a shareholder of The Company.

Agreements were concluded for the transaction and Mindset CC agreed to convert to Mindset (PTY) Ltd to allow a funder to become a shareholder. Mindset is continuously exploring the engagement of suitable PDSA candidates.
